Long celebrated by luxury travelers as a sanctuary of high culture, world-class classical music, and profound spa-induced serenity, this grand sanctuary has quietly engineered a revolution in family travel. Forget generic kids’ clubs defined by plastic toys and uninspired coloring books. At Elmau, the children are spending their mornings learning philosophy, mastering the art of Japanese manga, creating their own books, or programming artificial intelligence. Welcome to the resort’s legendary Edutainment Workshops. Where intellectual curiosity is treated as the ultimate luxury.

The Philosophy: Intellectual Luxury for the Next Generation

Schloss Elmau has always been more than a hotel; it is a cultural institution. It features its own concert hall, hosting globally renowned artists like resident virtuoso Igor Levit, and an exquisitely curated bookstore for four generations. The Edutainment program, masterminded by Heidrun Müller-Elmau, naturally extends this DNA to the younger generation.

As luxury hospitality pivots increasingly toward meaningful, transformative experiences, Schloss Elmau reminds us that the greatest gift we can give traveling children is space to expand their minds, and to make friends. They will still get their time to splash in the family pools and hike the crisp mountain trails, but they will return home with something far more permanent: a sparked imagination.

Led by an elite roster of authors, academics, and professional artists, the workshops operate on a compelling premise: children are capable of profound creativity and intellectual depth when given the right stage. Running for two to three hours every morning, these sessions transform traditional vacation downtime into an incubator for budding young polymaths.

“The goal isn’t to babysit; it’s to inspire. Kids leave these sessions not just entertained, but fundamentally shifted in how they view the world,” Heidrun Mueller-Elmau said.

From Wood Carving to Artificial Intelligence

What makes the program so distinct is its balanced embrace of both traditional, tactile craftsmanship and forward-thinking digital literacy. The curriculum spans an incredibly diverse range of modern and classic disciplines:

The Digital Frontier (AI & IT Labs): In an era where technology is ubiquitous, Elmau offers specialized AI Creativity Labs and IT Workshops. Here, kids move from passive tech consumers to active creators, exploring coding and experimenting with AI tools to better understand the digital architecture of tomorrow.

Visual Storytelling (Manga & Zoom Photo): Aspiring visual storytellers are guided through the precise line work of Manga illustration, while the Zoom Photo Workshop turns the surrounding Bavarian wilderness into a classroom for composition, light, and perspective.

The Classical Minds (Chess, Science & Literature): Deep strategic thinking is cultivated at the Chess Academy, while hands-on experimentation takes over the Science Lab. For introverted minds, the Literature and Philosophymodules invite deep dives into narrative structure and big questions.

The Logistics of Alpine Enlightenment

The atmosphere of these workshops mirrors the effortless sophistication of the hotel itself. While parents spend their mornings in the adults-only Badehaus Spa or hiking the alpine meadows, the children gather in the resort’s beautifully designed workshops or creative spaces.

Timing Workshops typically run for 2–3 hours in the morning, leaving afternoons open for family mountain adventures or family spa time.

Language True to Elmau’s cosmopolitan guest list, most workshops are entirely bilingual (German & English). Note: Literature, Philosophy, and Zoom Photo are conducted exclusively in German.

Booking Highly coveted and strictly limited in size to ensure individual attention. Early booking is strongly advised.
